When Leaders Break in Silence: A Personal Reflection on Ministry Burnout

Leadership is often seen as strength in motion, always present, always giving, always pushing forward, but what happens when the one leading begins to break quietly behind the scenes?

I remember when I first stepped into full-time ministry. I was passionate, ready to serve, and committed to doing the will of God. My mentor sat me down and gave me a warning that didn’t fully register at the time. He said, “You’re going to face many challenges on this journey. Ministry is a blessing, but it comes with a cost.”

He was right. The cost wasn’t just time or effort, it was emotional weight, spiritual warfare, and the pressure to stay strong for others while I was growing weaker myself.

There came a season when I was still showing up. I was still teaching, still praying for others, still speaking life into the weary, but I was silently breaking. I wasn’t lazy or unfaithful. I was just tired. Deeply tired. And like many leaders, I didn’t feel safe to say it out loud.

That season of burnout changed me. It humbled me. It taught me that burnout is not a sign of failure, it’s a signal. It’s God’s way of calling us back to Him, reminding us that our strength must be renewed continually, not assumed indefinitely.

From that experience, I wrote my latest book:
Strengthened to Serve, Renewed in Purpose: Conquering Ministry Burnout.

This book is for the leaders who serve faithfully but quietly suffer. It’s for the ones who are pouring out while feeling spiritually parched. It’s for those who are exhausted but think rest is a luxury they can’t afford.

In this book, I walk through the signs of burnout, the emotional toll of silent suffering, and the practical ways leaders can rebuild from a place of wholeness. I include a Ministry Recovery Toolkit, full of devotionals, prayer prompts, and reflection exercises, to support leaders not just in surviving but in truly healing.

If you’re a leader in ministry or the marketplace, know this:
You are not called to serve from a place of depletion. You are called to serve from a place of overflow.

We cannot give what we do not have. And as leaders, we must learn that rest is not weakness, it is wisdom. It is spiritual stewardship.

Your purpose is still intact. Your calling is still valid. But maybe God is calling you to pause, heal, and reset your pace.

Because being strengthened to serve doesn’t just mean continuing the work, it means being made whole again so that the work you do bears lasting fruit.
